INTRODUCTION
English 1301 is a study of the principles and
techniques of written compositions including sentence structure,
paragraph development, and paper organization. Also stresses the
development of critical thinking as it applies to the textual
analysis of expository prose. This course
satisfies an English requirement in most curricula.
Prerequisite: Appropriate test
score.
LEARNING
OUTCOMES
Upon
successful completion of this course, students will be able to do
the
following:
A. Organize
their thoughts into effective
sentences.
B. Organize
sentences into paragraphs, which adequately expand a central
thought.
C. Organize
paragraphs into a logical, coherent composition which
effectively
communicates
the writer's ideas to his readers.
D. Demonstrate the ability to read diverse materials,
generate ideas, and communicate
those
ideas in an effective 500-word essay.

COURSE
REQUIREMENTS:
A. Reading Assignments:
From the Reader and the Handbook as
specified in class schedule.
B. Essays
Three 500-word essays and one final 500-word essay due
as shown in class schedule.
C. Summaries
Nineteen one-paragraph responses to articles in
Reader. Due class of scheduled reading (see class schedule). If
late, only half credit.
D. Exercises
Eighteen exercises from Handbook. Due class scheduled.
If late, only 1/2 credit.
E. Resume
F. Class Performance:
1) Points are
given for attendance. More than one unexcused absence will affect
grade.
2) Work
missed must be made-up by the next class meeting.
3) If all
work is not completed by May 19, arrangements must be made with
instructor.
