ENGL 1302-COMPOSITION AND RHETORIC II

I. INTRODUCTION

A. English 1302 is a continuation of English 1301, with emphasis on written

Composition. The course focuses on the analysis of literature in order to further develop critical thinking and argumentation skills, which are necessary for writing effective expository prose. The course is writing intensive and requires the writing of a formal research paper, incorporating analysis of outside sources and the process of documentation.

B. English 1302 is designed to meet the second semester English requirement for

students transferring to a senior college or for students desiring the general

education of the first two years of college. The course employs critical thinking

and writing skills in the analysis of a wide variety of selected readings from poetry,

drama, short fiction, and the novel. The course satisfies the requirement for the

second semester English composition course and satisfies the requirement for an

introduction to literature in most curricula.

C. Prerequisites: The successful completion of the English 1301 with an earned grade

of C or better is a prerequisite.

 

II. LEARNING OUTCOMES

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will:

A. Apply language skills (writing and interpretative) to enable him/her to

communicate effectively in an educated society.

B. Specify discussion of the principal literary genres of poetry, drama, short fiction, and

the novel.

C. Employ through appreciation and personal responses, a critical and imaginative

approach to literature.

D. Create well-developed responses in expository prose.

E. Implement the research methods which are required in many college courses.

2. Troyka, Lynn Q. Simon and Schuster Handbook for Writers. 6th Edition

New Jersey: Prentice Hall, 2001.

3. A novel to be selected from a list provided by the instructor.

4. The Old Man & the Sea by Ernest Hemingway

 

IV. COURSE REQUIREMENTS

A. Reading Assignments

1. Reading assignments are to be read and carefully studied for class lecture,

discussion, and writing. See the class schedule.

2. Three 500-850 word essays will be written  on 1) a short story 2) the play, Death of a Salesman 3) The Old man and the Sea. Essays are to be typed or word

processed in MLA format. A formal outline MUST accompany every paper.

B.  Research Paper

Students will write a short research paper (5 pages) on a novel approved by the instructor. A formal outline and works cited page must accompany every paper. The research paper will follow the format outlined in the current edition of Simon and Schuster Handbook for Writers.

C. Poetry Presentation- Students will study and present a poem from the text according to

the guidelines explained by the instructor in class.

D. Paper Presentation-Students will present their research paper in class.

E. Attendance-Points are given for attendance.

F. The grade for work turned in late will be lowered by one letter. If all work is not

completed by May 19, arrangements must be made with instructor.

 

VI. SEMESTER GRADE COMPUTATIONS

1)      Essay on a short story in the text. 150 points.

2)      Essay on the play, Death of a Salesman. 150 points.

3)      Essay on the short novel, The Old Man and the Sea. 150 points.

4)      Oral presentation of a poem. 100 points

5)      5-page research paper on a novel- 190 points.

6)      Oral presentation of the research paper. 100 points.

7)      Attendance 160 points

Total- 1,000 points.    900+=A, 800+=B, 700+=C.

Sat Mar 31- Introduction.

 

Sat April 7 - pp. 1-63 in Literature. Read the short story, “ A Clean, Well-Lighted Place.”

Read “Writing about Literature” in Handbook.

 

Sat April 14- Read Short Stories. "A Rose for Emily," "A&P,” “Young Goodman Brown,” and, 

"The Cask of Amontillado." Intro to the Research paper (bring Handbook to class) 

 

Sat April 21- Essay due analyzing a short story (Other than the ones studied). Read The Old Man and

 the Sea (not in text).

 

Sat April 28-.  Introduction to Poetry. The Old Man and the Sea paper due.  

 

Sat May 5-  Oral Presentation of a poem . Read The Death of a Salesman. Continue discussion of

Research paper.

                         

Sat May 12- The Death of a Salesman paper due.  Continue discussion of research paper.

 

Sat May 19- 5 page research paper due. Oral presentation of papers.
