I.
INTRODUCTION
This course is a study of the
visual and performance arts from the viewpoint of
art
appreciation.
This course is designed to foster appreciation through knowledge
of
arts forms,
materials, terminology, techniques and processes, and historical
and
social
contexts. The student is made aware of the roles of maker/perceiver
in the arts
through a
number of hands-on projects which demonstrate the various stages
of
conception,
creation, and communication involved in a work of art. Critical
thinking
about the
arts is engendered through processing pertinent information
and
experience.
Three semester hours credit are earned for this course, and the
course fulfills
requirements
for humanities or art electives. Prerequisite:
none.
II.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon
successful completion of this course, the student will be able
to:
A. Explain
the roles of the art maker and the art
perceiver.
B. Explain
purposes for creating art.
C. Discuss
visual and performing art media and methods, and identify the
formal
elements of
art.
D. Identity
the arts of different civilizations and discuss the relationship in
the
development
of art and the growth of cultures.
E. Execute
individual ideas through visual/performance art
media.

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS
A. Required
Text: Sayre, Henry M. A World of Art, Revised 4th
Edition, Prentice Hall, 2004.
B. CD packaged with the
textbook.
C. Internet
access is recommended.
D. Various
videos, CDs & DVDs will be presented in class.
IV.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS
A. Reading
Assignments:
The student
is expected to read all assigned materials as listed in the course
schedule.
B.
Project:
Students will
complete a five-page paper on an artist to be approved by the
instructor. project.
C. Project
presentation
The artist
project will be presented to the class. See class
schedule.
D. Students
will submit a test on each chapter in the text from the Companion
site (http://wps.prenhall.com/hss_sayre_worldofart_4)

edition of the text. (http://wps.prenhall.com/hss_sayre_worldartrv_4), revised 4th
edition. a one-page
summary of each chapter if internet access is not available. These
are to be done by the night the chapters are assigned. See course
schedule. Late submissions receive ½
points
E. Students
will complete and submit Log for all exercises on the CD.
F.
Students will do one of the
following:
1)
Visit any
museum and write a one-page response.
2)
View any of
the following films and write a one-page response: Frida,
Surviving Picasso, Pollack, The Girl with the Pearl Earring,
or Lust for Life.
3)
Visit a
website dedicated to art and write a one-page
evaluation.
G. Attendance
and class participation. If you miss a class, write a one page paper
on the missed period of art to make up the
points.
H. If all work is not completed
by May 17, arrangements must be made with instructor.
